Streamlining News Collaboration

Design for a web and mobile app used within one of the nation's largest news corporations. The internal platform provides streamlined communication between news teams and improves story production. As part of the design team, I helped outline the product direction and launch the MVP. Since rollout, it has been used by thousands of staff across major news stories.

Shaping an Evolving Brand

Polyera (now acquired) is a technology company leading the research and development of flexible displays. As the company shifted its model to develop consumer facing products, I worked with their CEO and West's creative director to refresh their logo. The mark is derived from the atomic bonding angles of ethylene, a common component of plastics. These angles were outlined and modeled into a three dimensional form and flexed across its tangents. The end result is a simple, endlessly malleable shape that reflects the inherent properties of Polyera’s products.

Connecting Learning and Action

While there are a multitude of mainstream, independent, and aggregator news sites, very few connect information with direct action. Mark is a proposed browser plugin and mobile app which blend independent news with a collective response. The first goal of the platform is to create lessons that give context to today's pressing issues, addressing the difficulty of finding information in a landscape that increasingly separates factors. The second goal is to connect these lessons with actions through smart notifications.

Examining the Use of Water

Research to produce Velocity, a book focused on community initiatives around water use in Los Angeles. On location interviews were conducted with individuals and organizations practicing permaculture and water harvesting techniques. These interviews produced images, sketches, and insights to better understand alternatives to the city's current water usage.

Playing with Language

Sound Exploration: Text to Music is an experiment that translates words into music. The aim is to give text a form beyond the written and spoken word. Text was translated into Braille which was then cut into paper and fed through a music box. The music played in the video is the transcribed conversation between two designers.

Exploring the Influence of Image

In many ways, photographs are no longer used to remember a location or event, instead used as shorthand for conversation. These images are often delivered without words or explanation. Photographic Word, a proposed exhibition and app, seeks to expose the implications of this shorthand by combining a photograph with its Google Images result, a process totally devoid of language. This exploration highlights the growing influence of image search and its role on perceptions and vocabulary within a culture. In collaboration with Martin Grasser.
